Logan Mr Sam Gail lands debut win for Brian Yates
ON his first visit to the Northern Dairy Expo, Brian Yates took the overall championship title after being tapped out by Italian judge, Giuseppe Beltramino.
The show winner was the VG89 classified second-calver, Logan Mr Sam Gail, which was shown giving 56kg after calving with her second on July 1. This summer she took the reserve championship title at Dumfries show and was second in her class at the recent National All-Breeds show at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show. Part of Mr Yate’s 240-cow herd, Gail may go to AgriScot. This Regancrest Mr Drham Sam daughter is out of Logan Hershel Gail.
Taking the runner-up position was an EX93 fourth-calver, Carkin Goldwyn Elly. This Braedale Goldwyn daughter was bred by I.R. and J.M. Walton of East Layton, Richmond, and shown by Alasdair and Janeen Smith, who have a contract farming arrangement with Messrs Walton.
Elly calved in June and was shown giving 40kg, with a projected yield of 11,000kg. She is part of a 115-cow herd and this was only her second outing after taking reserve honours at Stokesley show.
The junior championship title went to F. Harrison and Sons of Clilburn, Cumbria, with Crossrigg Pageant Roxy. This home-bred three-year-old in-milk heifer is by Winton Pageant and was shown by Alysha Barraclough. The Harrisons took the junior title at last year’s show. Reserve in this section was Errolston Lotto Sarah, a VG86 classified in-milk heifer by Errolston Martel. This home-bred heifer was from Brian and Val Davidson of Gretna, Dumfriesshire.
The calf section was won by Shawdale Damion Pledge 2, an August 2010-born heifer by Erbacres Damion. She was shown by D.E., M.A. and J.A. Booth of Earby. Reserve was Aliann Alexander Miss Lolli, from J.D. and J.A. Holgate of Rathmell, Settle.
