Golden Flo is champion heifer in milk at Dairy Event

Livestock classes on the first day of the Dairy Event and Livestock Show, incorporating the National All Breeds Show, were dedicated to calves and heifers.

Taking the inter-breed heifer in milk championship, with a near perfect score of 49 out of 50 from all the breed judges, was the Holstein senior heifer in milk winner, Berryholme Golden Flo.

Owned by Francis, Anne and David Wright, Kendal, Cumbria, she calved in February and is currently giving 36kg. By Braedale Goldwyn, her maternal sister was champion at last year’s National Holstein Show. On her only previous outing she had been champion heifer at Cartmel Show.

It was a close call for second place with the Ayrshire and the Jersey tying on 42 marks. However, the reserve title was awarded to the Ayrshire, Hunnington Fragrance 55, from Christopher Window and his daughter Lisa, shown by Lisa’s husband, Paul Walker, on the basis that she was awarded more 10s by the judges.

By Castern Tornado, she calved in July and is currently giving 30kg. She was inter-breed champion at Nantwich and Oswestry and now heads to the South West and Welsh Dairy Shows.

With an almost identical line-up in the exhibitor bred championship, the panel of judges awarded the same placings at the top of the line.

The Jersey heifer in milk class winner was Etsill Comerica Radience by Bridon Remake Comerica, shown by Philip Manning. She calved in November and is currently giving 24kg and was inter-breed champion at Devon County Show on her only other outing this season.

The Mannings milk 30 Jerseys and 300 black and whites at Minsterley, Shropshire.

Andrew and Jane Whitaker took the Holstein calf championship with their home-bred, Knowlesmere Sanchez Chancel by Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez, also a winner at Nantwich.
